    The Harlem Meer Cats

Music of Duke Ellington's bands of the late 1920's and 1930's.

Ned Bennett – alto sax & clarinet

    Alan Berlyn – trumpet

    Alistair Alan – trombone

    Neil Casey – piano

    Jerome Davies – double bass

    Richard Pite – drums

As a joyful homage to the timeless music of Duke Ellington’s bands from the late 1920s and early 1930s, the Meer Cats, consisting of six exceptionally skilled early jazz specialists based in London, have dedicated themselves to reviving the sounds and atmosphere of the legendary Cotton Club in New York.

Expect to hear tunes such as It Don’t Mean A Thing, Jungle Nights in Harlem, Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me, Stevedore Stomp, Caravan, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, Mood Indigo,  Six or Seven Times, Perdido, In A Mellow Tone, The Jumpin’ Jive, I Let A Song Go Out of My Heart, The Ghost of Smokey Joe, Jubilee Stomp, Strangers in Love, along with many more favourites.

Their music has been arranged for the Harlem Meer Cats by their leader Ned Bennett, with each piece Ned transcribes the essence of the original recording, and distils it down to fit their streamlined 6-piece line up. All the melodies, harmonies and rhythms are carefully replicated. Played with authenticity, they treat every performance as a jazz gig with high energy playing, great improvised solos, and a swing feel to rank with the very best.
